چکیده

Most calculations of the vibrational scattering of diatom-atom collisions use the breathing sphere approximation (BSA) of orientation averaging the intermolecular potential. The resulting angularly symmetric potential can not cause rotational scattering. We determine the error introduced by the BSA into observables of the vibrational scattering of low-energy homonuclear diatom-atom collisions by comparing two quantum mechanical calculations, one with the BSA and the other with the full angularly asymmetric intermolecular potential. For ·reasons of economy the rotational scattering of the second calculation is restricted by the use of special incomplete channel sets in the expansion of the scattering wavefunction. Three representative collision systems are studied: H2-Ar, 0 2-He, and I 2-He. From our calculations, we reach two conclusions. First, the BSA can be used to analyze accurately experimental measurements of vibrational scattering. Second, measurements most sensitive to the symmetric part of the intermolecular potential are, in order, elastic cross sections, inelastic cross sections, and inelastic differential cross sections. Elastic differential cross sections are sensitive to the potential only if the collision is" sticky," with scattering over a wide range of angles; 12-He is such a collision. Otherwise the potential sensitivity of elastic differential cross sections is concentrated in the experimentally difficult region of very small angle scattering.

Atom-diatom scattering dynamics of spinning molecules.

We present full quantum mechanical scattering calculations using spinning molecules as target states for nuclear spin selective atom-diatom scattering of reactive D+H2 and F+H2 collisions. Molecules can be forced to rotate uni-directionally by chiral trains of short, non-resonant laser pulses, with different nuclear spin isomers rotating in opposite directions. The calculations we present are b...

Vibrational relaxation of trapped molecules

Vibrational relaxation of trapped molecules due to collisions with cold atoms is investigated using the results of quantum-mechanical scattering calculations. Trap loss is analyzed using an exactly solvable kinetic model that includes direct collisional quenching and an indirect process of vibrational predissociation. At low atom density, the relaxation is due primarily to collisional quenchin...

Coherent Control of Reactive Scattering

Coherent control of bimolecular reactions is demonstrated for 3D atom-diatom reactive scattering. In particular, a superposition of initial degenerate syjkd diatomic states is used to control reactive integral and differential cross sections in D 1 H2syjkd ! H 1 HD, where y and j are the vibrational and rotational quantum numbers of a diatom and k is the projection quantum number of the diatom ...

Close-coupling study of rotational energy transfer of CO „ =2... by collisions with He atoms

Quantum close-coupling scattering calculations of rotational energy transfer in the vibrationally excited CO due to collisions with He atom are presented for collision energies between 10−5 and 1000 cm−1 with CO being initially in the vibrational level =2 and rotational levels j=0,1 ,4, and 6. The He–CO interaction potential of Heijmen et al. J. Chem. Phys. 107, 9921 1997 was adopted for the ca...

The concept of quasiresonance was introduced in connection with inelastic collisions between one atom and a vibro-rotationally excited diatomic molecule. In its original form, the collisions induce quasiresonant transfer of energy between the internal degrees of freedom of the diatom: there is a surprisingly accurate low order rational value for the ratio of the changes in the vibrational and r...
